Salsa International 5 at Pakefield
It's been a while since I've been to a Pontins weekender (the one I went to most recently was the Cuban weekender early in 2003). So I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Salsa International 5 at the Pontins site at Pakefield. This event was the 27th Pontins Salsa weekender, organised as always by Cressida Childs and Club Cubana.
The event was for intermediate and advanced dancers and the line-up reflected this:
- Leo Garcia (NYC)
- Kenneth Bosnie and Barbara (Holland)
- Andrea Stuart (London)
- Marchant Birch (London)
- Robert and Jean White (London)
- Carol Ann Stephenson (Edinburgh)
- Doctor Salsa and Sandra D (Edinburgh)
- Juan and Sue (Manchester)
- Jim and Fritha (Guildford)
- Rohan and Cressida (Bristol)
For some alternative dance styles, there was also Juana Maria bringing Sevillanas and Tangos Por Rumba, and Nikita and Kiri bringing Bhangra and Bollywood. Cressida also booked a wide selection of DJ's: Cruz, Erik B., Tony M., Dr Salsa and myself.
The class schedule showed the wide range of Salsa styles being taught, including Cuban, On1, On2, threesomes and Cha Cha Cha. This was broken down into partnerwork, shines and styling.
Those who wanted to dance all night long weren't left out either. There were two rooms of music on until 5am every morning. The main room was pure Salsa while the 'party' room played a mix of styles including Salsa, Merengue, R&B and Dancehall.
I personally had a great time at the weekender. The atmosphere was very friendly, there were plenty of people to dance with and a good variety of music. It's good to see that the original UK Salsa weekender is not only still running, but is still delivering the goods.
